Missions Offering
September 2005
State
Missions at work in Belgium
By Phillip Reynolds
Oakland Baptist Church, Rock Hill, SC
Four beautiful, smiling,
young faces lightened the hearts and minds of 10 members of Oakland Baptist
Church in Rock Hill the third week of July as they led an English as a
Second Language (ESL) class in Brussels, Belgium. The volunteers taught
English three hours a day, including the topics of colors, foods and
numbers; but more important were the relationships established between the
children and their families with CBF field personnel Butch and Nell Green.
The focus of the Greens’
work in Brussels is to show God’s love to those in their community by
identifying and providing for their needs ‑ both material and spiritual.
This became the goal of the Oakland team’s work: to show love to these
children; to teach them language skills required in their schools; and to
connect the Greens to members in the community.
No preaching or
evangelizing occurred during the week, simply loving and teaching the
children like their own. Leaving was hard for the Oakland volunteers as
bonds were severed with such close companions, but they knew their love left
a lasting impression on the lives of the children.
And, to come out of the
week were two new adult ESL students for the Greens and relationships to
last a lifetime. All in all, a state missions success story.
The Partnership with
Baptists in Belgium is one of the
ministries supported by your gifts to the State Missions Offering of the
Cooperative Baptist Fellowship of South Carolina. The goal for 2005 is
$110,000.
