Keynote speaker

Cleophus J. LaRue, Princeton Theological Seminary’s Francis Landey Patton Associate Professor of Homiletics, received his B.A. and M.A. degrees from Baylor University, his M.Div. and Ph.D. degrees from Princeton Seminary. He specializes in the theory and method of African American preaching and worship. An ordained minister in the National Baptist Convention of America, Cleo is the former pastor of two churches in Texas as well as the former interim pastor of churches in Harlem and Jamaica, Queens, New York. He is a frequent speaker at churches, seminaries, and conferences throughout the country and is a member of the Academy of Homiletics.

LaRue will speak on Friday night and Saturday morning.

Colleen Burroughs

Missions Banquet

Colleen Burroughs is the executive vice president of Passport, Inc., an international non-profit student ministry empowering students to encounter Christ, embrace community and extend grace to the world. She is also the founder of Watering Malawi, an advocacy for long-term solutions for clean water and simple irrigation systems in the country of Malawi. Colleen holds a B.A. in communications, an M.Div. in pastoral care and has been awarded the Clyde T. Francisco Preaching Award and the John Knox Press Homiletics Award. She has been a Staley Lecturer and is a published writer and photographer. Born in Africa to missionary parents, Colleen grew up in four countries: Malawi, Zimbabwe, Kenya and Bophuthatswana. Colleen lives with her husband David and nine-year-old twins in Birmingham, AL.

The banquet immediately follows the afternoon break-out sessions at 5:00.

Logistics: The General Assembly begins with the Spotlight on South Carolina luncheon at 11:45 a.m. on Friday at St. Matthew Baptist Church in North Charleston. The business session starts at 1:15 and other events follow.

Friday sessions —the business meeting, workshops, missions banquet and worship — will be at St. Matthew.

Saturday sessions will be held at Providence Baptist Church on Daniel Island.

The Assembly will adjourn before lunch on Saturday.

The only cost is for meals, $8 for lunch and $15 for dinner.

Luncheon:
Carol Holladay, minister of education at First Baptist Church in Allendale, will speak about that church’s work with USC Salkahatchie students. Starts at 11:45 a.m. on Friday.
